CURRENT SCIENCE, VOL. 83, NO. 6, 25 SEPTEMBER 2002 707 *For correspondence. (e-mail: [email protected]) congestion in the cities. Similarly, in zoos, university campuses and areas of tourist attraction like heritage sites, these rickshaws should be encouraged. 2. Since both MAPRA and IMPRA are environmentally sound and user-friendly vehicles, they should get all the financial benefits available to renewable energy projects. Besides, all the Government of India schemes for providing employment to weaker sections of society should be used to give loans to rickshaw pullers who want to drive these rickshaws. 3. There is a need for the concerned authorities in India to exempt MAPRA from the purview of Motor Vehicle Act since it is essentially a pedal rickshaw with a small motor.

Extracellular proteolytic activity plays a central role in swarming motility in Bacillus subtilis.

Natural isolates of Bacillus subtilis exhibit a robust multicellular behavior known as swarming. A form of motility, swarming is characterized by a rapid, coordinated progression of a bacterial population across a surface. As a collective bacterial process, swarming is often associated with biofilm formation and has been linked to virulence factor expression in pathogenic bacteria. While the sw...

Improving the reproducibility of Pseudomonas aeruginosa swarming motility assays.

Swarming motility is a rapid and coordinated migration of a bacterial population across a semi-solid surface. This multicellular phenomenon is getting increasing attention as it is suspected to be related to biofilm development of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Published swarm plate preparation protocols differ greatly from one study to another and no reproducible and standardized protocols have been ...

The Transient Multidrug Resistance Phenotype of Salmonella enterica Swarming Cells Is Abolished by Sub-inhibitory Concentrations of Antimicrobial Compounds

Swarming motility is the rapid and coordinated multicellular migration of bacteria across a moist surface. During swarming, bacterial cells exhibit increased resistance to multiple antibiotics, a phenomenon described as adaptive or transient resistance. In this study, we demonstrate that sub-inhibitory concentrations of cefotaxime, ciprofloxacin, trimethoprim, or chloramphenicol, but not that o...

Biocontrol of Bacterial Fruit Blotch by Bacillus subtilis 9407 via Surfactin-Mediated Antibacterial Activity and Colonization

In this study, Bacillus subtilis 9407 showed a strong antibacterial activity against Acidovorax citrulli in vitro and 61.7% biocontrol efficacy on melon seedlings 4 days post inoculation under greenhouse conditions. To understand the biocontrol mechanism of B. subtilis 9407, identify the primary antibacterial compound and determine its role in controlling bacterial fruit blotch (BFB), a srfAB d...

Dynamics of bacterial swarming.

When vegetative bacteria that can swim are grown in a rich medium on an agar surface, they become multinucleate, elongate, synthesize large numbers of flagella, produce wetting agents, and move across the surface in coordinated packs: they swarm. We examined the motion of swarming Escherichia coli, comparing the motion of individual cells to their motion during swimming. Swarming cells' speeds ...
